Sometimes the spot you most need to watch is the one that’s hardest to reach — a building or yard with no power running to it, far from the nearest outlet. The usual answer is an expensive electrical run: trenching conduit, pulling power, and permits. But there’s another way to bring a modern network and camera system to a location the grid never reached: solar.
The challenge: security with no power on site
A manufacturing client came to us with exactly this problem — a building detached from grid power that still needed cameras and network connectivity. Running electrical service to it would have been costly and slow. They needed eyes on the site and a reliable connection without waiting on a utility project.
How an off-grid solution comes together
| Need | Off-grid approach |
|---|---|
| Power at a site with no grid | Solar panels sized to the load, with battery storage for night and cloudy days |
| Network connectivity | Wireless link back to the main network — no trenched fiber required |
| Reliable cameras | Low-power equipment chosen to run comfortably within the solar budget |
| Runs unattended | Remote monitoring so issues are caught before they cause an outage |
What we built
We designed a self-contained solar power system to run the cameras and networking gear at the detached building, with battery storage to keep everything online around the clock, and a wireless connection tying it back to their main network. The result: full visibility and connectivity at a location that, on paper, had neither power nor a network — with no utility trenching required.
The bigger idea
Off-grid networking opens up places that used to be “impossible” to cover — remote yards, detached storage, gates, outbuildings, and expansion sites. If power or wiring is the reason you’ve gone without cameras or connectivity somewhere, solar plus wireless may quietly solve it.
