Modern Dell workstations use Active PFC power supplies
Current Dell Precision, OptiPlex, and high-performance workstation models use power supplies with Active Power Factor Correction. Active PFC makes systems more efficient and is standard in equipment carrying 80 Plus certifications.
The challenge is that Active PFC power supplies are designed to work with a utility-grade sine wave. CyberPower specifically states that equipment with Active PFC power supplies requires a pure sine wave power source for optimal compatibility.
Why everything appears fine until the power fails
This is where businesses get confused. The workstation may run perfectly for months while plugged into the UPS. No warning messages, no crashes, no obvious problems.
Then a thunderstorm rolls through Fort Myers or Cape Coral. The power drops for a second and the UPS switches to battery. That’s when things can go wrong:
- Immediate shutdown
- Unexpected reboot
- System lockup
- Audible buzzing from the power supply
- Failure to stay powered during battery operation

For business-class Dell workstations, we generally recommend pure sine wave UPS technology with automatic voltage regulation, sufficient wattage capacity for the workstation and monitors, and USB or network-based monitoring capability.
If you already own a simulated sine wave unit, we recommend a controlled battery test: save all work, allow the workstation to operate normally, then disconnect utility power to the UPS and verify that the system continues running. If the computer powers off, reboots, or behaves unexpectedly, the UPS should be replaced with a pure sine wave model.
The best UPS is the one you never think about
